Eastern Michigan University Women’s Wrestling Team is official. Meeting at 7pm with coaches and athletes.
Trip to nationals
Practice days and times
Lots of work all day then Hurricane practice and welcome new girls from the community to wrestling. Arrive home about nine and shower then prepare for annual MHSAA Meeting till about 2:30am.
Early morning drive to East Lansing for the MHSAA annual meeting. I was able to talk to the Wrestling Committee about all the opportunities michigan girls have at this time, what other states are doing, Eastern Michigan University Team, numbers Nationally, freestyle is women’s college wrestling, and about all the great things wrestling has to offer the athletes and wrestling doesn’t care what race or gender you are. Before going to bed I spent hours getting weigh-in slips and registration ready for Jen and Mona as I knew I would not make it back in time for the weigh-ins at the hotel on Saturday. I got all the supplies packed up and ready to go for the tournament and about 2:30 am was finally able to get to bed.
Catch up on (work) paperwork 7-11am, then pack what I could up
In the car and get on the road to Missouri Baptist University, 560 miles for the WCWA Nationals. Coaches meeting from 9pm-11pm. Up till 3am could not sleep, worked on War of the roses registrations on trackwrestling.com and worked on ideas for promoting the WCWA and building a better fan base for the events.
Up at 6am for what I’m not sure. Excited to watch the best College age girls in the country. Grab a little breakfast and head out, at the gym by 8:30. Amazing day of wrestling with many former Michigan team member doing extremely well and all the girls won matches and moved on to the second & the blood round, wrestling ends around 9pm. Dinner and back to room to try and catch up on sleep. After a little (work) from the road got to sleep by midnight.
For some reason I’m up at 3am and can’t sleep but trying. Down for coffee and breakfast by 7am. Great opportunity to sit and talk with parents and coaches. Off to the gym by 10 for semi’s- finals. Some great wrestling and a few upsets with 2 Michigan girls making the finals of the 10 weights. THATS GOOD STUFF. As soon as awards were done I got to sign a little girls shirt her dad got her at the tournament and was having all the athletes and coaches sign 🙂 I even ran out and found her a War of the Roses tshirt for a gift. What a cute little thing to put a smile on the lil girls face and it capped off the long day at a wrestling tournament . 7pm Time to get on the road to Colon for the War of the Roses girls event.
Arrive at Host hotel at 3:15 am after a few phone calls, on the 7 hour drive, talking about girls wrestling with friends from Texas and California. I got to room and sunk into the mattress. Back up at 6 am to drive to Colon HS, back into poor Michigan weather, late getting to the tournament, first time on my own with trackwrestling and I made a few little mistakes, figured it out and pushed through it. Lack of sleep and tring to pair the event was a factor for sure. Lots of great brackets with some very amazing wrestlers giving their heart even a few that push through being a bit under the weather. With everything running we found a way to get lots of exhibition matches and everyone seemed to have a good time with just a little of the normal little complaints about officials you get at any event. Just with the weather would have been better, more families would have made it for matches with the tough hammers from Wisconsin and Colorado that made the long trip out. As the event whined down it got to talk more wrestling with an ext really great group of coaches and athlete from Marshall and Colon. Great to see their passion their face and the words they say. We packed up and headed back getting to Battle Creek and stopping for food. It was great getting to see Brittany back on the mat being a leader and watching her get all excited about wrestling and spending time with all the girls and teammates. The tournament and wrestling seemed to be all she talked about at dinner. Thankful she was there to drive me home. I was asleep in no time and I was not sure I would make it home safe.
Conclusion to the craziest week of
Without support from great people this would not all be possible. I just want to thank my family for sticking behind me when I neglect them for my passion for wrestling and all my efforts to better the sport for girls. Also all the people that help like Mike Houston for his nonstop promoting wrestling, Molly Engedal for not only making the trip out but for volunteering all her time putting together the website for the WAR OF THE ROSES and taking pictures of the matches. Your efforts are greatly appreciated. Mona Spenser is the greatest, she always steps up where needed. Never complains about doing what needs to be done and always the bulldog when we need her in that role, with all the things her family has going on she loves her daughter, wrestling, and building the road of success for our girls. And to all the other families that showed up. The smiles, handshakes, hugs and everyone’s support for the girls is awesome and I thank you all.
